China has built full-fledged graphics cards from scratch to replace AMD and Nvidia. The Russians are saved

In just one year, the Chinese startup Moore Threads has created two video cards from scratch on its own architecture – for PCs and servers. The cards are able to compete with AMD and Nvidia accelerators, and it is likely that they will be sold in Russia, while AMD and Nvidia have left the Russian market.

Accelerated video card development

Chinese company Moore Threads has announced MTT S60 and MTT S2000 graphics cards. This is a startup, founded in October 2020 and a little over a year old, which has developed its first full-fledged accelerators.

The MTT S60 was designed for use in desktops and high-performance workstations, while the MTT S2000 is designed to run on servers. Developers for unknown reasons did not master the latest technical processes and stopped at 12 nm. However, the cards, at least the desktop MTT S60, are capable of pulling modern video games – during the presentation, the developers demonstrated it in the game League of Legends with high graphics settings at a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels (Full HD).

Moore Threads is behind it Zhang Jianzhong (Zhang Jianzhong). He is both the founder and CEO of the company, and he is directly involved in the video card segment. More recently, he held the position of Vice President of Nvidia in China, writes the portal profile resource VideoCardz.

Replacement of AMD and Nvidia desktop cards by Moore Threads

Nvidia is the world’s largest player for discrete video accelerators. AMD competes with it. These are American organizations, and they both left the Russian market in March 2022. At the same time, China has not yet joined the anti-Russian sanctions, which means that Moore Threads cards, in theory, can be bought in Russia or at least issued from China. .

Zhang Jianzhong does not disclose the date of serial issuance of his cards.

The possibilities are impressive

According to Moore Threads, the company’s first graphics cards show a fairly high performance. The desktop S60 produces 6 TFLOPS and the server S2000 12 TFLOPS. Of course, this is not the level of the flagship graphics cards Nvidia and AMD, but popular in Russia and the world accelerators, they will still be able to compete. For example, the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 at the peak emits 6.5 TFLOPS.

Both maps are built on MUSA’s first-generation Moore Threads Unified System Architecture, codenamed Sudi. It supports OpenCL, OpenGL, Vulkan and Nvidia CUDA technologies used in GPUs of well-known brands. DirectX support is also available.

The desktop card comes with 8 GB of LPGDDR4X memory, the server’s memory capacity is 32 GB. The younger card uses 2048 MUSA cores, the older one has exactly twice as many.

Remote work

It should be noted that the MTT S60, unlike the monstrous competitors on the chips AMD and Nvidia, takes up relatively little space in the system unit. This is a single-slot solution that allows you to use it even in very compact cases. Cooling in the cards is active, turbine type. MTT S2000 is also single-slot, but with passive cooling.

Tech giants will support

During the presentation of video cards, representatives of Moore Threads boasted a large number of large investors representing the global IT segment. They did not disclose the entire list of companies that have invested in Moore Threads, nor did they name the amount of their investment.

Moore Threads for servers do not require active cooling

We only know that the list includes the Chinese company Lenovo. It is the largest PC manufacturer in the world, represented in the Russian market. He is accompanied by the Chinese IT holding Tencent.

The developers said their cards will run on computers and servers based on x86 and ARM processors running Chinese operating systems. It is unclear whether they are going to release drivers for Windows.

Overtaking Intel

China’s Moore Threads is significantly outpacing the pace of development of its products, the American Intel, which is also trying to penetrate the global market for discrete graphics cards, and which also left Russia. She had experience in the production of accelerators, but at the end of the XX century, and in December 2018 she announced her return to this segment.

However, after more than three years, the company has not started mass production of video cards for either desktop or mobile PCs. In January 2021, it showed its discrete Iris Xe desktop graphics card, which proved to be a complete failure. It was a basic solution, incompatible with AMD processors and most of Intel’s own chips. The card could only work on motherboards with certain chipsets and a special BIOS firmware.
