Google has released Chrome 100, the world’s first three-digit browser. As a result, many sites will not work properly because they only identify the first two digits of the version, and support for Chrome 10 was discontinued many years ago. Firefox users will not be able to access the required sites in May 2022 when it is upgraded to version 100.
Chrome is dangerous for the Internet
Google has upgraded its Chrome browser to version 100. It is the first web browser in the history of the Internet to be an adult to the three-digit version.
This is a threat to the stable operation of the World Wide Web. This is due to the fact that not all sites are ready for browser versions. CNews wrote that many of them will define Chrome 100 as Chrome 10, which was released 11 years ago, in March 2011. Its support has long ceased, and sites may simply not open and issue a message about the need to update the software.
In terms of innovation, Chrome 100 is almost no different from Chrome 99. One of the most significant changes is the new (actually old) logo, which has become noticeably flatter, but brighter.
What has changed
Despite the historic release, there are no major innovations in Chrome 100. The focus is on security – Google has fixed 28 vulnerabilities in its browser. The vast majority of them were insignificant, and only nine were considered critical.

Prior to the release of version 100, Google built a new API into Chrome, which makes it easier for the browser to work on configurations with multiple monitors. For example, it could be a laptop connected to an external screen with high resolution and other proportions. The new API allows you to adapt to multiple monitors, not only the browser itself, but also web applications running in it.
At the same time, one useful feature in Chrome 100 has decreased. Google has stripped it of its mobile version of traffic-saving settings. For the Russians, this would be a very useful feature, as the country’s tariffs for unlimited mobile internet may soon disappear. Google has also decided to disable traffic savings in previous versions of the browser.
A new look at version indexes
Chrome grew by 13.5 years before version 100 – its first stable build with an index of 1.0 was released in December 2008. It was Google that initiated the version race. Prior to Google’s introduction to the browser market, developers of other browsers with the new release of their product changed only the numbers after the first point in the version index. They increased the first digit in the version number by one only with the release of a large-scale update. Google has chosen a different path – Chrome 2 was released in May 2009, Chrome 3 appeared in another five months. As a result, by early 2010, Google had updated its browser to version 4. Later, new numbered versions of Chrome were often released several times a month, which led to the release of Chrome 50 in April 2016, ie 7.5 years later. since the advent of Chrome 1. The next 50 versions of Google took another six years without a month.
Later, other popular browsers joined the race. Firefox was the first to do so, followed by Opera. The latter held on to the latter until the developers abandoned their engine in favor of the universal Blink.

The authors of the classic Opera in January 2015 created the Vivaldi browser. He does not take part in the race – by the end of March 2022, his most current version had an index of 5.2.
It’s Firefox 100’s turn
The problem with the incorrect operation of sites in browsers with a three-digit version index will worsen in May 2022. The release of Firefox 100 is scheduled for this month.
In this case, little depends on the users. It is their owners who teach the site to “read” the browser version correctly.
Users can simply disable the automatic update of Firefox and Chrome and work in their existing versions. This will not affect the stability of the display of sites in the future for the next few months.

There is a more radical option – you can change the browser to any of the existing ones, whose version is up to 100. In addition to the aforementioned Vivaldi, it may be the same Opera, which on March 23, 2022 was updated to version 85. And Apple has its own Safari browser , in February 2022, which received version 15.3. At the same time, Microsoft’s Edge in this case is not the best alternative to Chrome, as on March 17, 2022 it was updated to version 99.
Chrome currently accounts for 62.78% of the global browser market (StatCounter statistics for February 2022). In Russia, its share is 54.98% against 16.08% in the domestic “Yandex.Browser”. The latter in March 2022 was updated to version 22. which also allows you to use it as an alternative to Chrome 100.
