“Masters” in Miami was started by four Russians – Daniil Medvedev (1st seed), Andrei Rublev (5), Karen Khachanov (23) and Aslan Karatsev (29). In the first match, Rublev and Khachanov left the distance. And Karatsev lost at the stage of the 3rd round. As a result, only Daniil Medvedev, who heads the net of this tournament, reached the 1/8 finals. The Russian confidently played two matches with Andy Murray from Great Britain and Pedro Martinez-Portero from Spain, without losing a single set.

Reaching the 1/8 finals meant that Medvedev came very close to the main goal in this tournament. After all, the Russian in Miami is fighting not only for the prestigious title, but also is fighting for the return of the title of the world’s first racket. After the Masters in Indian Wells, Daniel lost the lead in the world rankings and missed ahead of Djokovic. The gap between them was 55 points. By the end of the tournament, the Russian will burn 180 points for last year’s draw, and Novak – 45 points for Miami 2019. Thus, Medvedev needed to score more than 190 points to overtake the Serb again. To do this, you need to make it to the semifinals.

Medvedev’s opponent in the 4th round was determined in the match Jenson Brooksby (USA) – Roberto Bautista-Agut (Spain). It should be noted that in February, Daniel in an interview called the Spaniard his most uncomfortable opponent. This is not surprising, because Roberto won the Russian all three matches out of three. But the 4th meeting did not happen in Miami. Brooksby knocked out Bautista-Agut and for the first time in his career went to Medvedev.

It is worth noting that 21-year-old Jenson is only the second season in the ATP tour. But he has already managed to prove himself – twice reached the final – in Newport 2021 and Dallas 2022, won many victories over famous tennis players – for example, over Karen Khachanov in Indian Wells 2022 and Aslan Karatsev at the US Open – 2021. And in the same Indian Wells, he defeated the current top 10 tennis player, Stefanos Tsitsipas, for the first time in his career. The tournament in Miami Brooksby started at the highest 39th place in the ATP rankings.

Two-time Mixed Slam champion Andrei Olkhovsky shared his views on Medvedev’s new rival in an interview with the Championship: “Brooksby proved to be very good at the Australian Open. Serves, goes to the grid, everything here depends on Daniel. If he plays the same way, without mistakes, then the chances of winning are very good. With Brooksby, the most important thing is to keep your serve, to win all your points. The opponent will run forward, the serve will be with the exit to the grid. It’s important not to make mistakes on your own. ” And the beginning of the match confirmed Olkhovsky’s fears.

Indeed, it took Medvedev some time to adjust to the American’s style of play. He served well, sharply and deeply spread the ball around the corners, went to the net, shortened and tried to put the Russian in a dead end. But the starting game Daniel lost on his serve and was in the role of catching up for a long time. Only with a score of 4: 5 during the opponent’s submission to the set, Medvedev reached the break point for the first time and immediately realized it – 5: 5. And then the Russian took another pass from the opponent – 7: 5 in 51 minutes. Daniil broke up so much that in the next game he made a break again, led 3: 0 and confidently succeeded – 7: 5, 6: 1 in 1 hour 19 minutes.

So Daniil Medvedev managed in two sets with Brooksby and reached the quarterfinals of the “Masters” in Miami, repeating his last year’s best achievement in this tournament. Now the Russian is separated from returning to the 1st place in the ATP rankings by only 1 victory. His next opponent will be Lloyd George Harris (South Africa) and Hubert Hurkach (Poland).
