Inquisition due to CDPR waiver of ports for PS3 and Xbox 360 – Industry on DTF

According to him, the simultaneous development for two generations destroyed the ambitions of the studio.

Former BioWare general manager Aaron Flynn spoke about the production of Dragon Age: Inquisition in an interview with journalist Kirk McKindu.

The manager recalls that with the Inquisition, the team for the first time switched to DICE’s Frostbite engine, which was not originally intended for large open-world RPGs and complex systems. However, Flynn believes that the team managed to cope with the difficulties and rethink the continuation of Dragon Age.

Flynn says the main compromise is that BioWare had to develop the Inquisition for PCs and two generations of consoles – PS3, Xbox 360, PS4 and Xbox One. According to him, for the sake of this studio had to give up some interesting mechanics, because it lacked staff and time. Flynn recalls that they always had to take into account the lowest common denominator.

According to the ex-manager, “The Witcher 3” ended up better even due to the fact that CD Projekt RED once abandoned the ports for PS3 and Xbox 360.

The game was released by a Polish studio only seven months after the Inquisition, so players and critics often compared the two great RPGs.

I would say that the biggest compromise was because we had to release the Inquisition on PS3 and Xbox 360 at the same time as the release on PS4 and Xbox One. It just ruined our many ambitions because we didn’t have enough people and time to differentiate these platforms. And we always had to take into account the lowest common denominator.

Understandably, this has affected our expectations and plans for some gameplay mechanics. As another example, CD Projekt RED did not do this during the development of the third “The Witcher” and I think that because of this their game turned out better.

former general manager of BioWare

Flynn admits that Frostbite still greatly hindered the team during the production of the third Dragon Age. Looking back, the former manager believes that he could better interact with management and try to convey to them the problems faced by BioWare.

Flynn left BioWare in July 2017. He currently runs Inflexion Games, which is working on its debut project called Nightingale, a game with survival and construction mechanics in the Victorian setting.
