Russian special forces have captured Ukrainian nationalists mocking Russian prisoners of war, said Vladimir Shamanov, deputy head of the State Duma’s Committee on Civil Society Development, Public and Religious Associations.
«[Те, кто] washed over our servicemen, they did not rejoice for long, three days later our special forces captured these scum. Today they are lying at their feet, asking for mercy, “Shamanov said during a round table in the State Duma (quoted by TASS).
According to the deputy, both captured come from the fan group of the local football club “Metalist”. They admitted this during the interrogation, Shamanov added. Law enforcement agencies of the Russian Federation and the Ministry of Defense have not yet announced the detention.
On March 27, journalist Maria Dubovikova posted footage of the military on Twitter. From the publications we can conclude that the action takes place in Ukraine after the start of a special operation there, but there is no specific information about the time and place. On the same day, the chairman of the TFR, Alexander Bastrykin, instructed the agency to find out the circumstances of the incident, as well as to identify those involved in bringing them to justice. According to preliminary data from the UK, “illegal actions took place at one of the bases of Ukrainian nationalists in the Kharkiv region.”
Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for the Russian president, said people who took part in the torture should be held accountable. Adviser to the head of the office of the President of Ukraine Alexei Arestovich said that the country’s authorities take this video very seriously and “will conduct an investigation immediately.”
The head of the Russian delegation in talks with Ukraine, presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky, said Kiev had promised to punish the tortured Russian military. “So far, I can say that we have protested against the videos of the abuse of captured Russian servicemen. This protest was accepted by the Ukrainian side, they promised to take the toughest measures if they are the first to be caught, “he added.
The UN has drawn attention to the video of the abuse of Russian prisoners of war. The head of the monitoring mission of the human rights organization in Ukraine Matilda Bogner called on the authorities of Russia and Ukraine to investigate cases of torture of prisoners of war. Bogner reminded the parties to the conflict of their obligations under international humanitarian law and international human rights law to treat prisoners of war humanely.
