South Ossetia is ready to follow the example of Crimea and join Russia. This statement was made by the President of South Ossetia Anatoly Bibilov.

“South Ossetia has always aspired to the Russian Federation, because Ossetians, South Ossetians, consider Russia their historical homeland. Here I see absolutely no difference with the Crimea. Crimea has returned home, and today, I think, it is time for South Ossetia to return home as well, ”Anatoly Bibilov told RIA Novosti.

According to Bibilov, Russia is being consulted on this issue. The referendum could take place after April 10, he said. South Ossetia has repeatedly tried to return to Russia, in the 1930s, 1950s, 1980s and 1990s, until 2008, Bibilov said.

Crimea returned to Russia in 2014 after a referendum among the citizens of the peninsula. South Ossetia is an independent and partially recognized state. Russia has recognized its independence. At the end of March, Bibilov announced plans to join the territory of the Russian Federation, Ridus reports. The Kremlin noted that they respect the desire of the republic, but so far no legal steps have been taken in this regard. Georgia and the United States opposed the initiative of South Ossetia to hold a referendum, Utro.ru reports.
